What is Flash Fiction?

Flash fiction is a style of extremely brief literature, usually between 300 and 1,000 words. It is a complete story with beginning, middle, and end that contains other elements of fiction such as setting, character, conflict, and resolution.

How to Enter

Write a flash fiction story 1,000 words or less then submit it to ACFW North Denver by midnight, September 1, 2015.


By entering and winning you could receive one of the following prizes

  • Grand prize winner:  acknowledgement as grand-prize winner, their story published in the ACFW North Denver Flash Fiction/Novel Crafters magazine, $25 stipend, free copy of magazine.
  • People’s choice winner:  acknowledgement as people’s choice winner, their story published in the ACFW North Denver Flash Fiction/Novel Crafters magazine, free copy of magazine.
  • Eight honorable mentions:  acknowledgement a finalist, their story published in the ACFW North Denver Flash Fiction/Novel Crafters magazine, free copy of magazine.

ACFW North Denver Flash Fiction Contest Submission Requirements

  1. Story must have a clear beginning, middle, ending, and resolution. Those submitted without these elements will be ruled ineligible.
  2. Story must be:
    • Well-edited (no first drafts!)
    • Fiction
    • 1,000 words or less
    • In .doc format
    • Double-spaced
    • 1″ margins (all around)
    • 0.5″ paragraph indentations
    • Size 12 Times New Roman font
    • Have your name and story title in upper left corner
  3. Entry fee:  $15
  4. ACFW North Denver represents a Christian organization. While it is not required that your story have a spiritual theme, submissions containing sexually explicit scenes or descriptions, swearing, foul/suggestive language, or graphic violence will be ruled ineligible.
  5. You may enter as many times as you wish, with a different story.  However, for each submission, you must also fill out an entry form and submit an additional entry fee.
  6. Only online entries submitted to ACFW North Denver will be accepted.
  7. Contest is open to published and unpublished authors eighteen years and older.
  8. All entries must be received by midnight, September 1, 2015.
  9. Finalists will be contacted by Bethany Williams to advise them of their acceptance and to finalize editing and contract details.
  10. Submissions will be voted on by a panel of judges, fellow ACFW members. 
  11. One First Place winner, and one Second Place winner will be selected by our judges.
  12. Winners will be announced at the ACFW North Denver Novel Crafters Retreat November 6 & 7, 2015. Winner(s) need not be present.
  13. One grand prize winner and up to nine honorable mention winners will be chosen by our panel of judges, to have their winning stories published in the 2015 ACFW North Denver Novel Crafters Retreat magazine.
  14. Names of all winners will be listed on the ACFW North Denver website and social media pages by November 10, 2015.
  15. By entering, you allow ACFW North Denver  to post your name on our website, in our newsletter, and on our social network sites (such as Facebook and Twitter).
  16. By entering, you grant ACFW North Denver worldwide first print rights to use your entry in publication to include print, electronic and audio recordings for publication and promotion.
  17. ACFW North Denver is not responsible for expenses or compensation for work submitted. Prize monies are paid on the basis of contest rules and do not in any way indicate a legal contract with ACFW North Denver and Flash Fiction/Novel Crafters Seminar Magazine or its associated companies.
